The Proud Basketball Team at Sangmyung University

Did you know there is a basketball team at Sangmyung University? Since the basketball department is located at the Cheonan Campus, students from the Seoul campus and those not interested in sports may not be aware of it. In this article, I will take a look at the proud Sangmyung University basketball team, its players, and their triumph in the 2025 Stove League.
In 1996, following Sangmyung University's transition to a coeducational institution, the university aimed to create a dynamic campus environment and enhance its reputation by establishing a basketball team. As a result, the men's basketball team was officially founded on February 26, 2009. Remarkably, just one year after its founding, the team was promoted to the first division in 2010, consistently demonstrating strong performances ever since
Currently, in 2025, Sangmyung University Basketball Department is composed of 10 players, including Jun-hwan Choi, Dong-myung Hong, Jung-woo Song, In-seop Park, Jung-woo Wi, Jung-hwan Choi, Chan-young Kim, Min-kuk Kim, Young-ki Han, and Yong-jun Yoon.
On February 5, at the 2025 Korea University Basketball Federation Stove League, Sangmyung University triumphed over Sungkyunkwan University. At the beginning of the game, Sungkyunkwan University played with high intensity, successfully made a three-point shot and took control of the game. However, the Sangmyung University team took the lead in the game with skillful play and defeated Sungkyunkwan University aided by three-point shots from Dong-myung Hong.
After the game, Sangmyung University manager Seung-jin Go said, "Since it was our first game, the players seemed somewhat nervous, so the results of our training were not fully reflected. Nevertheless, I’m happy we won, and I appreciate the players for their hard work."
Additionally, Dong-myung Hong, the captain of the basketball team, said, "I’m happy with the win. However, since our team is aiming for the playoffs this season, we won’t settle for this victory. We are focused on giving our best in every game."
When asked what they were most looking forward to in the university league, Min-guk Kim said, "There are many skilled guards in the current university league, so I want to compete against as many players as possible." Young-ki Han said, "I want to play against various university players to assess my skill level." Yong-jun Yoon said, "Unlike in high school, we practice with professional teams. By practicing with pro teams, I want to learn from their strengths and make them my own."
Sangmyung University basketball players made an impressive start to the 2025 game by winning their first game against Sungkyunkwan University. With the league set to begin in March, there's much anticipation surrounding how the team will perform in the coming matches. After sufficient training and rest, it would be exciting to see the players showcase their skills and determination on the court.
