Where is an English-speaking Doctor’s Clinic?

Facility Information for Foreign Students In or Around the Campus of Sangmyung Univ.

Sangmyung Univ. has many foreign students. In Korea, it is not easy for foreigners to find information about various amenities and medical facilities. In this edition of the SM Herald, we have organized an article to provide this information. First, we got help from Professor Samuel Alexander Denny to get information on how to approach these issues from a foreigner's perspective.

Question 1) What facility information do foreign students need in or around the campus of Sangmyung Univ.?

Answer) When you are not feeling well, if you’re a foreign student, you may not know where the nurse's office is, I don’t know where it is, either. Additionally, I think there may be some school counselors to help international students who are experiencing difficulties. And I want to make sure they know how to use the sports facilities when they want to work out or exercise: hours of operation, how long they are open, how they can sign up, how they register to use the gym or tennis court.

As for facilities outside campus, an international student once asked me where she could find an English Speaking dentist for dental work. There are students where Korean speaking skill is very low, so I think having some information about English-speaking doctor’s clinics and English-speaking dentist’s offices would be helpful. There are doctor’s clinics near the campus, of course, but what if some international students can’t speak Korean? Those students may feel more comfortale if the doctor can speak English or other languages.

Question 2) How did you get the information so far?

Answer) So in my case, I learned a lot from my friends, and I have searched for English speaking clinics in Seoul. The students can do this on their own, but it would be very helpful for the SM Herald to organize and share some of this information. Publishing this kind of article shows that we care about our international students and want about to support them.

Sometimes I still go to an international clinic in Itaewon and also not too far from Sangmyung, Yonsei Severance Hospital has an international clinic. There is a very good doctor there and his name is Dr. Linton, director of the International Health Care Center of Yonsei University’s Severance Hospital. He grew up in Korea and speaks perfect Korean, with an accent of Jeolla Province.

Question 3) Have you ever used the Korea map or GPS navigation system apps that provides services in English?

Answer) I have not. You guys grew up in the digital age, but I’m still kind of old-fashioned. I tried it, but I’m still not good at it.

I think for international students your age, however, it would be no problem.

Question 4) Are there any inconveniences?

Answer) I think international students who don’t know how to use those applications might need Korean friends to help them to do it. Teaching and explaining that kind of information, I think, is useful.

Professor Denny suggested that information on the use of a nurse's office, counseling rooms, sports facilities, etc. needs to be shared to international students. In addition, he agreed that sharing useful app for navigating facilities out of campus would be good for students to know. Some of the facilities on campus are listed below, and information links and how to use the navigation application for Korean regional medical facilities are also shown below.A follow-up article on using sports facilities is going to be published next spring.
